Factors to Consider in Selecting Tiles for Flooring | Part-1



Since there are several different options available in selecting tiles for flooring, homeowners and builders often get confused about which tiles they should use for flooring. In fact, different tiles are suitable for different areas of home and that’s why one should carefully consider home areas and their usages at first to select the best flooring tiles.


In this post, I am going to discuss some really crucial factors which every builders and homeowners must consider to choose the best flooring tile for their homes.

Material: Most popular tile materials are marble, ceramic, porcelain, vinyl, slate, brick etc. These flooring materials come with various colors and their prices also range from very low to extremely high. So anyone, who is willing to install tiles, should select the tile considering his price and preferred colors.

Durability: Durability is a really major issue to consider while selecting tile. Because if the tile isn’t strong enough to bear the load of a particular place, it will break very easily. For example- marble and granite may be prone to staining and crack. On the other hand, vinyl, ceramic and brick are very resistant to tear and wear. So homeowners must consider the foot traffic of the intended area of installation before choosing tile.

Resistance to Water: Home areas where are more likelihood of getting wet like kitchen and bathroom, flooring materials which have smooth finishes shouldn’t be used as they can be very slippery. Ceramic or mosaic tiles having rugged appearance should in used in such wet places.


Outdoor or Indoor Use: If the intended area of installation is located in outdoor, then brick, terracotta or clay would be your ideal material. If you want to install tiles in indoor areas, then think about ceramic, mosaic tiles etc.

Ease of Maintenance:   Maintenance is a really crucial factor to think while selecting an appropriate tile. Usually the texture and the amount of grooves inscribed on the tile have a deep relation with the amount of dirt accumulated by that tile. Besides, different tiles are compatible with different cleansers. So before selecting tiles for home areas, one should also know about the maintenance technique required for a particular tile.
